Gujarat Vidyapith - 1920
For imparting national education, Gandhiji established Gujarat Vidyapith on 18th October 1920 and became its first Vice Chancellor. It was inaugurated on 15th November, 1920 in the buildillg of Dahyabhai Ijatram Vakil, where 59 students registered.
The present building was constructed in 1925 with the donation of Rs. 2,50,000/- by Pranjivan Mehta. The workers and students of Vidyapith participated in the independence movement actively. They made arrangements for Dandi March. Vidyapith was closed by the British Government during the civil dis-obedience movement and Quit India Movement in 1942.
There are institutions for primary, secondary and Higher education. Vidyapith is active in spreading our national language for the last fifty years. It also renders its services in the field of the national programmes like Adult Education. A Training & Research Centre for the study of Adivasi Society and Culture is also run in Vidyapith. There are departments like International Jainism Study Centre, Ahimsa Research Foundation and Indian Languages & Culture Foundation. Thus Vidyapith is a big educational complex and it is a statutory university.
Gandhiji was its first Vice-chancellor After his demise, Vallabhbhai Patel, Rajendraprasad, Morarji Desai and Ramlal Parikh worked as Vice-chancellors.

Gujarat University - 1949
The biggest and the most prominent university of Gujarat has now completed 60 years of its establishment. Initially, it was the biggest university of India covering the entire Gujarat under its jurisdiction. Celebraties like Gandhiji, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, Acharya Anand Shanker Dhruv, Dada Saheb Mavlankar played vital role in its establishment. Later, Ahmedabad Education Society became active. Sheth Kasturbhai Lalbhai's vision was responsible for acquiring a vast area of land for it. Gujarat University came into existence on November 23,1949. Sir Harisiddhbhai Divetiya was its first Vice Chancellor. There were 21 affiliated colleges and 3 recognised instihltions under its jurisdiction.
Eventually, other faculties such as Arts, Science, Commerce, Engineering, Law, Medical, Pharmacy and Dental as well as other specialized courses started in Gujarat University. With the pace of time, number of colleges increased greatly. Then universities like Saurashtra, South Gujarat and North Gujarat came into existence. At present 183 colleges of higher education, 12 recognised institutions and 24 other institutions are affiliated to Gujarat University. The university caters to the educational needs of about 2 lakh students.

Nirma University - 1994
Dr. Karsanbhai K. CEPT University - 1994
A leading institute imparting education in design is CEPT(Centre for Environmental Planning & Technology), an autonomous institution registered in 1994. School of Architecture, School of Planning and School of Interior Design are run under it.
Infact, this institution was started by its founder director Balkrishna Doshi, a well known Architect in 1962. At present about 1000 students are registered in this centre for different courses. CEPT is contributing substantially in various development projects.

PRL-Physical Research Laboratory - 1947
Dr. Vikram Sarabhai, a gem of Ahmedabad, started this scientific institute of world class in two rooms of his Bungalow in 1947. The buildiI1g of this institute is situated behind Gujarat University.
The institute took up the study and research of 'cosmic rays' and 'upper atmospheric rays'. it participate in international geophysical programmes in 1957-58 that brought international fame to it.
In the year 1976, courses on theoretical physics, space physics, plasma physics and nuclear physics were introduced. This institute has played a vital role in sending the first Indian Rocket into the space from Thumba in 1963.

ATIRA-Ahmedabad Textile Industries Research Association - 1947
For the development of textile industry, an institution called ATIRA was established in 1947. It is the first instihltion of its kind in India. Seventy seven founder members collected the initial fund under the chairmanship of Sheth Kasturbhai Lalbhai. The foundation stone of ATIRA was laid by Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. ATIRA received services and guidance of Dr. Vikram Sarabhai from the beginning. The research activity in the institution is developed as per the demand of textile industry in the country. As a result, the production capacity and quality of product is improvised. The member mills get the guidance from ATIRA about their problems.

BPA-Blind People's Association - 1950
The Blind People's Association is a prestigious institution of the city, which is continuously making efforts to bring light in the life of blind people since 1950. The entire credit goes to the founder of the institution, Jagdish Patel, who himself was a blind.
The chief aim of Blind People's Association is to provide services to the blind persons for their training, education and rehabilitation. Various kinds of trainings are under taken here. The physio-therapy course run here is perhaps the best of all courses.
This Blind People's Association has been giving surprise to the people by arranging state level cricket tournament for blinds since 1982.

IIM-A - Indian Institute of Management-Ahmedabad -1961
Sheth Kasturbhai Lalbhai and Dr. Vikram Sarabhai established Indian Institute of Management in 1961 in collaboration with Gujarat State and Government of India. The State Government allotted 65 acres of land in Vastrapur area. The institute started functioning in academic collaboration with Harvard University, USA. Dr. Sarabhai was the first director of the institute.
The building of IIM is designed by a famous American architect, Louis Kahn. IIM Ahmedabad has earned reputation as top rated academic institution in management studies. The institution runs courses ranging from two years duration to five years' Doctorate level.
Companies from private and public sector as well as multinational companies offer jobs to the students of this institute with hefty package. There are about 10 management Institutes in India similar to IIM

NID-National Institute of Design - Ahmedabad - 1961
The National Institute of Design was established With the co-operation of the ministry of industry, Government of India in 1961. The building and the campus of the institute is a symbol of culture. It was designed by Gautam Sarabhai and Giraben Sarabhai. It is considered to be a unique institute in the entire Asia in the field of design. SEWA-Self Employed Women's Association - 1972
SEWA is a well known women's organization in the city which is engaged in the work of providing employment as well as procuring bank loans to 6,89,511 working women of India induding 5,35,674 working women of Gujarat. SEWA is not only an institution but also a mission, a movement with Gandhism. All the workers of SEWA wear Khadi Clothes. Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) was brought under the jurisdiction of Space Commission and Department of Space (DOS). ISRO is playing a vital role in the programme and implementation of Space programme. Dr. Vikrambhai laid the foundtion of this.

CERC-Consumer Education and Research Centre - 1978
CERC is a unique institution working for the protection of the consumers' rights, which started in 1978. In 1986, the Consumers' Education and Research Society was organized on membership basis to create awareness about their rights and to fight for the difficulties and problems faced by the consumers. At present, there are more than seven thousand members across the country. CERC carries campaigns against the exploitation of the consumers as well as protects the rights of the small scale investors.
